Homemade Trail Mix
Whether you are grabbing a snack for yourself, packing a lunch for your kids, or just in need of sweet munchies, this trail mix is a hit both nutritionally and in taste! YOU get to add all the ingredients that fit yours and or your family’s taste-buds. Get creative, spice it up, add your favorite “pops” of flavor!
Homemade Trail Mix
1 C nuts: pecans, walnuts, cashews, peanuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, macadamia, pistachios
1 C seeds: sunflower, pumpkin, hempseeds
1 C toasted unsweetened organic coconut flakes
1 C dried fruit: cranberries, blueberries, raisins, currants, mulberries, goji berries, cherries, banana chips

Pinch of Celtic sea salt (optional if you’ve salted the nuts and seeds)
To Toast any nuts, seeds or coconut flakes, there are two methods: stove top or oven.
On the stove top you have a bit more control over how “toasty” you get them. In the oven sometimes we forget and burn them…I’ve done that more times than I’d like to admit!
So, stove top is our first choice. We call it “dry toasting”.

Take a dry skillet and heat it. Once your skillet is hot, add a pinch of salt and nuts/seeds. Add just enough so there’s a single layer of nuts that touch the skillet. Toast them on medium low heat in small batches, turning them every few minutes as they begin to brown. Once they are browned, cool nuts, seeds, and or coconut flakes on a tray. Make sure they are cool before mixing with other goodies, or chocolate will melt…
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl or shake vigorously when added into your container.
Note: When stored in a plastic bag the trail mix tends to take on the taste of the plastic after awhile. We recommend storing your trail mix in a glass container and adding it to your baggies as you “grab and go”.

NOTE: When buying roasted nuts and seeds at the grocery store they have already begun to release their natural oils, thus they become rancid quicker. So we suggest toasting small amounts of raw nuts and seeds bought in bulk. You may store all your raw ingredients in a glass jar in a cool dry place or refrigerate them.
