Cherry Lime Smoothie

Calling all cherry lovers! Cherry Lime Smoothie is Pegs latest creation! It’s just the right amount of sweet and tart using the first of the season’s stone fruit!  The idea for this Cherry Lime smoothie originated from a childhood memory! Peg’s would go with her family to a drive-in-diner called Dolores’ in Los Angeles. They were famous for their burgers; fries and this refreshing soft drink called a Cherry Lime Ricky! The drink was sweet and cooling, especially on those hot summer days! Cherries and lime are great together!

We love cherries and we also love eating them fresh as is, especially while they are in season! They make a great good for us snack too!  You can find cherries from May to August, however the tart or sour cherries have a very short 2-3-week season.

Cherries help you sleep better and run faster! WHAAT! The benefits one gets from eating fresh cherries in season is simply fantastic! I also recommend eating organic cherries if possible. I’ve had some tough reactions from the chemicals and pesticides some farmers use, after accidently tasting non-organic cherries at the farmers market. If you can’t find organic, then use a fruit wash or  soak them in baking soda for a natural way to reduce chemical residue.

Some Fun Facts about cherries!

Cherries come in many colors and varieties! Red, yellow and pink-ish. Bing, Black and Rainier are the most common cherries we find in our local farmers and super markets. However, a fun fact… there are more than a thousand different varieties of cherries around the globe! They can be sweet, tart and or sour! Who knew that there are so many different kinds of cherries we can enjoy! Natures candy!

Cherries are filled with powerful sources of antioxidants, anthocyanins, flavanol’s and phytonutrients, these sweet and tart gems are a powerful source of nutrition!  Loaded with fiber, vitamin C, B and K, potassium, magnesium and other essentials nutrients to help promote a healthy body, heart and brain! In addition, cherries help reduce inflammation! They are also high in the phytochemicals that help fight cellular damage, protect against many chronic conditions and some diseases.

A great way to extend fresh cherries in season is to freeze them! Pit them using Peg’s favorite cherry pitter. Then bag a cup at a time and store frozen, ready for your next smoothie! Don’t forget cherries come dried and are great sprinkled dried or fresh on top of hot cereal, added into granola or into our yummy cherry muffins!

Thankfully you can find cherries in the freezer section of your grocery store.  Make our newest Reset friendly Cherry Lime smoothie all year using frozen cherries! If you’re a chocolate lover like us, try another fun cherry smoothie, Cherry Garcia Smoothie! Chocolatey goodness!

More favorite ways to enjoy cherries from your Curry Girls Kitchen is to add pitted or dried cherries into a yogurt parfait, or in a Galette, Pie, or Pavlova! There are so many ways to include these amazing beneficial fruits.

We hope you enjoy adding this new smoothie into your rotation! Especially if you are doing our 21-Day cleansing with food Reset, or as a spring or summer-time snack or midday pick me up!
